In 2019, the Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI) partnered with 30 high school learners from Mtubatuba for an innovative project that blended science and creativity. Alongside a professional sound engineering crew and public engagement specialists from Jive Media Africa, the learners transformed research findings from five separate projects into five unique hip hop songs.

The Hip Hop Health programme went beyond music. It gave learners hands-on experience, practical skills, and a deeper understanding of how scientific research can drive real change in their communities. Through this creative process, the students discovered their own voices while engaging with important health research in an accessible and inspiring way.

Urban Cinematography was proud to document this journey, capturing the energy, creativity, and empowerment of the learners. From filming to editing, it was an inspiring project that showed how music and science can come together to spark curiosity and community impact.
